Richard Johnson was Senior Lecturer and Lecturer in the Department of Geography at Manchester University from 1954 to 1985.
He has published some thirty papers on subjects relating to the Geomorphology of North west England with special reference to the landforms of the Manchester Region, Cheshire, the Peak District and the South West Pennines.
In 1985 he edited The Geomorphology of North-west England published by the Manchester University Press (ISBN: 978-0719017452) to coincide with the First International Geomorphological Conference held at Manchester University (attended by 675 delegates from 51 countries, 15th-21st September 1985).
Since 1959 Richard Johnson has been a resident in the Mellor Parish and over the past fifty years has explored the Mellor landscape.
